This protein exists in an inactive,non-toxic protoxin form within the bacterial crystal. When an insect ingests this crystal,the alkaline $pH$ of the insect's gut solubilizes the crystals and converts the inactive protoxin into an active,toxic insecticidal protein. This active toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and creates pores,causing cell swelling and lysis,eventually leading to the death of the insect.
