They grew some phages in a medium containing radioactive phosphorus $(^{32}P)$ to label $DNA$ and others in a medium containing radioactive sulfur $(^{35}S)$ to label proteins. They allowed these phages to infect $E. coli$ bacteria. After agitation and centrifugation,they observed that radioactive phosphorus $(^{32}P)$ was found inside the bacterial cells,while radioactive sulfur $(^{35}S)$ remained in the supernatant. This proved that $DNA$,not protein,entered the bacteria and acted as the genetic material.
