The primary $CO_2$ fixation occurs in the mesophyll cells,where $CO_2$ is accepted by Phosphoenolpyruvate $(PEP)$ to form a $4$-carbon compound called Oxaloacetic acid $(OAA)$.$2$. This $OAA$ is then converted into malic acid (or aspartic acid) in the mesophyll cells themselves.$3$. The malic acid is then transported to the bundle sheath cells,where it undergoes decarboxylation to release $CO_2$ for the Calvin cycle.Therefore,the formation of malic acid takes place in the mesophyll cells.
