In $C_3$ plants,the enzyme $RuBisCO$ acts as an oxygenase under high $O_2$ concentrations,leading to photorespiration,which results in the loss of fixed carbon and energy. $C_4$ plants have evolved a specialized anatomy called $Kranz$ anatomy,which separates the initial $CO_2$ fixation (in mesophyll cells) from the Calvin cycle (in bundle sheath cells). This mechanism increases the concentration of $CO_2$ around the $RuBisCO$ enzyme in the bundle sheath cells,effectively suppressing the oxygenase activity of $RuBisCO$ and thereby minimizing photorespiration.
