(D) The lungs do not collapse even after forceful expiration because of the presence of negative intrapleural pressure. This negative pressure is generated by the pleural membranes,which act as a suction force that keeps the lungs expanded against the chest wall. Because of this constant negative pressure,the lungs are held in a stretched state,preventing them from collapsing completely. Consequently,a certain volume of air,known as the $Residual  Volume$ $(RV)$,always remains in the lungs and cannot be expelled.
