When an aliphatic or aromatic primary amine is heated with chloroform $(CHCl_3)$ and alcoholic potassium hydroxide $(KOH)$,an isocyanide (or carbylamine) is formed. The reaction is: $CH_3-CH_2-NH_2 + CHCl_3 + 3KOH \rightarrow CH_3-CH_2-NC + 3KCl + 3H_2O$. The product formed is ethyl isocyanide $(CH_3-CH_2-NC)$.
