During this process,the molten matte $(Cu_2S + FeS)$ is oxidized. $FeS$ is removed as slag,and $Cu_2S$ undergoes self-reduction: $2Cu_2S + 3O_2 \rightarrow 2Cu_2O + 2SO_2$ $2Cu_2O + Cu_2S \rightarrow 6Cu + SO_2$ The resulting copper contains dissolved $SO_2$ gas,which forms blisters on the surface upon cooling,hence it is called blister copper.
