(A) When $NaCl$ crystals are heated in an atmosphere of sodium vapor,the sodium atoms deposit on the surface of the crystal. $Cl^-$ ions diffuse to the surface and combine with $Na$ atoms to form $NaCl$. This happens by the loss of electrons by sodium atoms to form $Na^+$ ions. The released electrons diffuse into the crystal and occupy anionic sites. These anionic sites occupied by unpaired electrons are called $F$-centers. This results in an excess of sodium metal in the crystal,hence it is a metal excess defect.
