When $FeSO_4$ is added to a solution containing nitrate ions followed by the addition of concentrated $H_2SO_4$ along the sides of the test tube,a brown ring is formed at the junction of the two layers. The brown ring is due to the formation of the complex $[Fe(H_2O)_5(NO)]SO_4$.
