(B) The aeration tank is a critical component of the secondary treatment (biological treatment) in a sewage treatment plant. In this tank,the effluent from the primary settling tank is constantly agitated mechanically and air is pumped into it. This allows vigorous growth of aerobic microbes into flocs (masses of bacteria associated with fungal filaments to form mesh-like structures). These microbes consume the major part of the organic matter in the effluent,significantly reducing the Biochemical Oxygen Demand $(BOD)$.
