The enolate carbon attacks the other carbonyl carbon,forming a five-membered ring (intramolecular aldol addition). $3$. This results in a $\beta$-hydroxy ketone intermediate. $4$. Upon heating $(\Delta)$,the intermediate undergoes dehydration (elimination of water) to form the stable $\alpha,\beta$-unsaturated ketone,which is $3$-methylcyclopent-$2$-en-$1$-one derivative.
