(A) The cell membrane is composed of a lipid bilayer which is hydrophobic in nature. Non-polar and hydrophobic molecules can easily pass through the lipid bilayer due to their lipid-soluble nature. However,polar molecules (hydrophilic) cannot pass through the non-polar lipid bilayer easily. Therefore,they require specific membrane proteins,known as carrier proteins or channel proteins,to facilitate their transport across the membrane. This process is called facilitated diffusion.
