Each daughter cell receives one of the two parental valves (the larger epitheca or the smaller hypotheca). The daughter cell that receives the smaller hypotheca secretes a new, even smaller hypotheca to fit inside it. Consequently, the size of the cell decreases with each successive division until a critical minimum size is reached. At this point, the cell undergoes sexual reproduction to restore its original size.
