In this process,bauxite is heated with coke and nitrogen at $1800 \ ^\circ C$ to form aluminium nitride $(AlN)$,while $SiO_2$ is reduced to silicon $(Si)$ which volatilizes. $Al_2O_3 + 3C + N_2 \rightarrow 2AlN + 3CO$ $SiO_2 + 2C \rightarrow Si + 2CO$ The $AlN$ is then hydrolyzed to produce pure alumina.
