(B) This is the Molisch test,which is a sensitive chemical test for the presence of carbohydrates.In this procedure,the carbohydrate solution is mixed with an alcoholic solution of $\alpha$-naphthol.Then,concentrated $H_{2}SO_{4}$ is added slowly along the sides of the test tube.The concentrated acid dehydrates the carbohydrates to form furfural or its derivatives.These derivatives react with $\alpha$-naphthol to produce a purple or violet-coloured ring at the junction of the two liquid layers.
