(B) According to the proton transport theory,proposed by Levitt $(1974)$,the regulation of stomata (i.e.,opening and closing) depends upon the active entry and exit of potassium ions $(K^+)$ in the guard cells.During the day,starch is converted into malic acid in the guard cells,which dissociates into malate ions and protons $(H^+)$.The protons are pumped out of the guard cells,and in exchange,potassium ions $(K^+)$ are taken up from the surrounding subsidiary cells.This accumulation of $K^+$ ions decreases the water potential of the guard cells,leading to the influx of water,which causes the stomata to open.
