It inhibits the $H^+/K^+$ exchange mechanism in the guard cells and promotes the efflux of potassium ions $(K^+)$ and malate. This reduction in osmotically active solutes causes water to move out of the guard cells,making them flaccid. As a result,the stomatal pore closes to prevent further transpiration.
