(A) Ascent of sap in plants was demonstrated by the Girdling experiment.In this experiment,the bark (cortex and phloem) of a plant stem is removed in a ring-like fashion.Due to this,the downward conduction of food (photosynthates) to the roots is stopped.However,the upward conduction of water and minerals through the $Xylem$ remains unaffected,which proves that the $Xylem$ is responsible for the ascent of sap.The plant may survive for some time,but eventually,it dies because the roots do not receive the necessary nutrients (sugars) for survival.
