In the chloroplast,the process involves the development of a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane. This gradient is created due to the accumulation of protons ($H^+$ ions) in the lumen of the thylakoid,resulting from the photolysis of water and the activity of the electron transport chain. The movement of these protons back into the stroma through the $CF_0-CF_1$ $ATP$ synthase enzyme complex provides the energy required for the phosphorylation of $ADP$ to form $ATP$.
