When an injury occurs,platelets and injured tissues release factors that lead to the formation of an enzyme complex called thrombokinase. This enzyme converts the inactive protein prothrombin present in the plasma into active thrombin in the presence of $Ca^{2+}$ ions. Subsequently,the active thrombin converts the inactive,soluble fibrinogen present in the plasma into active,insoluble fibrin threads. These fibrin threads form a network that traps blood cells to form a clot. Therefore,the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin by thrombin is a key step in blood clotting.
