Grignard reagents are strong bases and react with compounds containing acidic protons,such as alcohols,to form an alkane and a magnesium salt. The reaction is: $C_4H_7MgCl + C_4H_7OH \rightarrow C_4H_8 + C_4H_7OMgCl$ Here,the cyclobutyl group $(C_4H_7^-)$ abstracts the acidic proton from the hydroxyl group of cyclobutanol to form cyclobutane $(C_4H_8)$.
