Detergent molecules are hairpin-shaped,consisting of a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. The hydrophobic tails attach to the dirt (oil/grease),while the hydrophilic heads remain in the water. This process helps to emulsify the dirt,lifting it away from the fabric surface and allowing it to be washed away easily.
