(A) Permutit,also known as zeolite,is a hydrated sodium aluminosilicate with the general formula $Na_2Al_2Si_2O_8 \cdot xH_2O$. It is used to remove the hardness of water by ion exchange. During the process,the $Na^{+}$ ions in the zeolite are replaced by $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions present in hard water,making the water soft. When all the $Na^{+}$ ions are replaced by $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$ ions,the permutit becomes exhausted. Therefore,exhausted permutit does not contain $Na^{+}$ ions.
