Producers (autotrophs) capture solar energy and convert it into chemical energy in the form of organic compounds (glucose). This total amount of organic matter synthesized per unit area over a time period is known as $GPP$. Part of this $GPP$ is utilized by producers for their own respiration $(R)$,and the remaining energy is stored as Net Primary Productivity $(NPP)$,where $NPP = GPP - R$.
