Because the lungs are elastic and rely on the negative pressure of the pleural cavity to remain expanded against the chest wall,the loss of this negative pressure causes the lungs to collapse. As a result,the surface area for gas exchange is drastically reduced,leading to severe respiratory distress and an increase in the breathing rate as the body attempts to compensate for the lack of oxygen.
