(C) The ascent of sap in plants is primarily driven by the transpiration pull. Loss of water from the mesophyll cells of leaves due to transpiration decreases their turgor pressure $(T.P.)$ and increases their diffusion pressure deficit $(D.P.D.)$. As a result of the increased suction pressure,these cells absorb water from the adjacent xylem vessels of the leaves. This creates a negative pressure or tension in the xylem sap,which pulls the water column upwards from the roots to the leaves.
