In this mechanism,the hydroxyl group is converted into a good leaving group,and a base (pyridine) abstracts a proton from the adjacent carbon atom to form the double bond. According to Zaitsev's rule,the more substituted alkene is the major product. Therefore,the double bond forms between the carbon bearing the methyl group and the adjacent carbon,resulting in $1$-methylcyclopentene as the major product.
