(A) Photorespiration is a wasteful process that occurs in $C_3$ plants when the enzyme $RuBisCO$ acts as an oxygenase instead of a carboxylase. $C_4$ plants have evolved a specialized leaf anatomy called $Kranz$ anatomy,which physically separates the initial $CO_2$ fixation from the Calvin cycle. In $C_4$ plants,$CO_2$ is initially fixed in mesophyll cells by $PEP$ carboxylase,which has a high affinity for $CO_2$ and does not bind with $O_2$. This $CO_2$ is then transported to bundle sheath cells,where it is released at a high concentration around $RuBisCO$. This high concentration of $CO_2$ effectively suppresses the oxygenase activity of $RuBisCO$,thereby preventing photorespiration.
