The lithium salt $(L)$ then reacts with methyllithium $(CH_3Li)$. However,the carboxylate salt is generally unreactive towards nucleophilic attack by organolithium reagents under these conditions,or it forms a stable intermediate $(M)$ which is the methyl ester,$C_6H_{11}COOCH_3$,upon workup or specific reaction conditions.$3$. The final step is the hydrolysis of $(M)$ with $H_3O^+$. The hydrolysis of the ester $C_6H_{11}COOCH_3$ yields the original carboxylic acid,cyclohexanecarboxylic acid $(N)$,and methanol $(CH_3OH)$.$4$.
