These spores germinate to form a small,multicellular,photosynthetic,free-living,thalloid gametophyte known as the prothallus. The prothallus bears sex organs called antheridia (male) and archegonia (female),which produce gametes (sperm and eggs,respectively). Therefore,the prothallus is responsible for the production of gametes.
