$A$ bullet of mass $5 \, g$ travelling at a speed of $120 \, m s^{-1}$ penetrates deeply into a fixed target and is brought to rest in $0.01 \, s$. Calculate: $(a)$ the distance of penetration in the target,$(b)$ the average force exerted on the bullet.

Suppose a ball of mass $m$ is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed $v$. Its speed decreases continuously until it becomes zero. Thereafter,the ball begins to fall downward and attains the speed $v$ again before striking the ground. It implies that the magnitude of the initial and final momentum of the ball are the same. Yet,it is not an example of the conservation of momentum. Explain why?

$(a)$ If the mass of a body is doubled, what happens to its acceleration when acted upon by the same force? Justify your answer.
$(b)$ It is easier to stop a tennis ball than a cricket ball moving with the same speed. Why?
$(c)$ A girl of mass $40 \, kg$ jumps with a horizontal velocity of $5 \, m s^{-1}$ onto a stationary cart with frictionless wheels. The mass of the cart is $10 \, kg$. Find her velocity as the cart starts moving. Assume that there is no external unbalanced force working in the horizontal direction.
