(D) The opening and closing of stomata are regulated by the turgor pressure of the guard cells. When water enters the guard cells through osmosis,they become turgid. Due to the thick inner walls and thin outer walls of the guard cells,the turgidity causes the cells to bulge outwards,thereby opening the stomatal pore. Conversely,when guard cells lose water and become flaccid,the pore closes.
