However,formic acid $(HCOOH)$ contains an aldehydic group $(-CHO)$ attached to a hydrogen atom,which makes it a reducing agent. Therefore,formic acid gives a positive Fehling's test. The reaction is: $HCOOH + 4OH^{-} + 2Cu^{2+} \rightarrow CO_2 + 3H_2O + Cu_2O$ (red precipitate).
