These primary oocytes enter prophase $I$ of meiosis and are temporarily arrested at this stage. As the follicle matures,the primary oocyte completes its first meiotic division to form a haploid secondary oocyte and a first polar body. The secondary oocyte then begins the second meiotic division but arrests at metaphase $II$. This second meiotic division is only completed after the sperm penetrates the secondary oocyte during fertilization. This process results in the formation of a second polar body and a mature haploid ovum (ootid).
