This leaves as water to form a resonance-stabilized benzylic carbocation,which is then attacked by $Br^-$ to yield $3-(bromomethyl)phenol$.In reaction $(II)$,the ether oxygen is protonated by $HBr$. The $C-O$ bond cleavage occurs such that the methyl group is released as $CH_3Br$ because the $C-O$ bond involving the phenyl ring has partial double bond character due to resonance,making it stronger and harder to break. Thus,the reaction yields benzene-$1,3-diol$ (resorcinol) and $CH_3Br$.
