From the $SA$ node,the cardiac impulse travels to the atrioventricular node ($AV$ node),which lies between the right atrium and the ventricle.Then,the impulse passes to the $AV$ bundle (also called the Bundle of His). The branches of the $AV$ bundle extend along the interventricular septum and reach the Purkinje fibres in the ventricles.The Bundle of His provides the only route for the transmission of the wave of excitation from the atria to the ventricles. Purkinje fibres conduct the impulses five times more rapidly than the surrounding cells,forming a pathway that ensures the heart muscle contracts in the most efficient manner.
