To form $4,5-$diethyloctane,the molecule must be split symmetrically at the bond between $C_4$ and $C_5$. The structure of $4,5-$diethyloctane is $CH_3-CH_2-CH_2-CH(C_2H_5)-CH(C_2H_5)-CH_2-CH_2-CH_3$. Splitting this gives two units of $CH_3-CH_2-CH_2-CH(Br)-CH_2-CH_3$ ($3$-bromohexane).
