(C) Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal-linked recessive trait that can be transmitted from parents to the offspring when both the partners are carriers for the gene $(Hb^A Hb^S)$.It is caused by a point mutation in the $DNA$ sequence,specifically a single base pair substitution ($GAG$ to $GUG$) in the gene coding for the beta-globin chain of hemoglobin.This mutation leads to the substitution of glutamic acid $(Glu)$ by valine $(Val)$ at the sixth position of the beta-globin chain.Due to this,the hemoglobin molecule undergoes polymerization under low oxygen tension,causing the $RBCs$ to change their shape from biconcave disc to an elongated sickle-like structure.
