In $1990$,the first clinical gene therapy was given to a $4$-year-old girl with adenosine deaminase $(ADA)$ deficiency. $ADA$ deficiency is caused by the deletion of the gene for adenosine deaminase,which is crucial for the proper functioning of the immune system. This condition leads to Severe Combined Immunodeficiency $(SCID)$. In this therapy,lymphocytes from the patient's blood are grown in a culture outside the body,and a functional $ADA$ cDNA is introduced into these lymphocytes using a retroviral vector,which are then returned to the patient.
