When a solution containing nitrate ions is treated with freshly prepared ferrous sulfate $(FeSO_4)$ solution and then concentrated sulfuric acid $(H_2SO_4)$ is added carefully along the sides of the test tube,a brown ring is formed at the interface. The brown ring is due to the formation of the complex $[Fe(H_2O)_5(NO)]SO_4$. In this reaction,the nitrate ion is reduced to nitric oxide $(NO)$,which then reacts with the ferrous ion to form the brown-colored complex.
