To remove this acidic impurity,a basic flux,limestone $(CaCO_3)$,is added. Inside the blast furnace,$CaCO_3$ decomposes to form calcium oxide $(CaO)$,which reacts with $SiO_2$ to form a fusible slag,calcium silicate $(CaSiO_3)$. The reactions are: $CaCO_3 \rightarrow CaO + CO_2$ $CaO + SiO_2 \rightarrow CaSiO_3$ (slag). Thus,$X = SiO_2$ and $Y = CaCO_3$.
