This leads to the formation of a tetrahedral intermediate,which then collapses to expel the stable $CBr_{3}^{-}$ carbanion and form benzoic acid $(PhCOOH)$. Finally,an intermolecular proton exchange occurs between the carboxylic acid $(PhCOOH)$ and the $CBr_{3}^{-}$ carbanion,resulting in the formation of the benzoate ion $(PhCOO^{-})$ and bromoform $(CHBr_{3})$.
