In the given reactant,$p$-methylacetophenone $(CH_3-C_6H_4-COCH_3)$,both the methyl group $(-CH_3)$ and the acetyl group $(-COCH_3)$ are attached to the benzene ring. Alkaline $KMnO_4$ oxidizes alkyl groups attached to the benzene ring to carboxylic acid groups $(-COOH)$,provided there is at least one benzylic hydrogen.
