(A) The reaction sequence involves two steps:$1$. The starting material is isobutyrophenone $(Ph-CO-CH(CH_3)_2)$. Treatment with excess $HCHO$ and $NaOH$ (base-catalyzed aldol condensation) leads to the hydroxymethylation of the $\alpha$-carbon. Since there is only one $\alpha$-hydrogen,it reacts with one equivalent of $HCHO$ to form $Ph-CO-C(CH_3)_2-CH_2OH$.$2$. In the second step,treatment with $HCHO$ and a catalytic amount of $H^+$ leads to the formation of a cyclic acetal ($1$,$3$-dioxane derivative) by the reaction of the carbonyl group and the hydroxyl group with formaldehyde. The carbonyl oxygen and the hydroxyl oxygen react with $HCHO$ to form a six-membered ring structure.Thus,the final product is the cyclic acetal shown in option $A$.
